#1 Some solve a user problem, but not a climate problem (i.e. they “greenwash”).

#2 Some solve a climate problem, but it’s not one people will pay for (at least not with the current business model).

So how do you maximize impact AND build a profitable product in climate tech?

You need to consider 3 key elements:

  • Understanding user pain points. It’s crucial to understand what motivates your users. This isn’t always easy when you’re focused on climate issues too.

  • Monetization. Someone has to be willing to pay for the solution you build… otherwise you’re a non-profit! Founders need to validate the business model before they scale.

  • Measurable climate impact. Climate should be interwoven to the core of the product. When the impact is at the core of the product, it’s easy to communicate it to users, of course.
